Wrongly Jailed Free After 37 Years in Prison
Archie was jailed on the accusation of raping and stabbing a white woman in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The 59-year-old man had to spend 36 years in prison for the crime he didn’t commit.
At 22, Archie was charged with life imprisonment without parole in 1983. He said he was home asleep at the time of the assault. Before his performance, he said in an interview that his fingerprint wasn’t found at the scene,
“as a poor black kid, [he] didn’t have the economic ability to fight the state of Louisiana,”
However, everything changed when the Innocence Project took up his case, who requested DNA testing and fingerprint comparisons to prove Williams’ innocence.
Eventually, Archie’s fingerprints were submitted in March 2019 and proven to be the wrong person to commit the crime. After 36 years, his charges were dismissed.
