Brent Renaud, a U.S. documentary filmmaker, has been killed by Russian forces in the flashpoint town of Irpin, outside of Kyiv, on Sunday morning. He appears to be the first journalist killed in the Russia-Ukraine war. His colleague, US photographer Juan Arredondo, is injured and being treated at a hospital.

Brent Renaud died after he was fatally shot in Ukraine by Russian troops on Sunday morning, March 13, according to Ukrainian law enforcement. He was hit in the neck.
Together with fellow journalist Juan Arredondo, who was also injured in the attack, Renaud was reporting on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The two were shot at in Irpin, a suburb located just north of Kyiv, while they were on their way to film people leaving Kyiv.
Andriy Nebytov, Kyiv’s region police chief, announced Brent Renaud’s death via a Facebook post, where he wrote:
“The occupants cynical kill even journalists of the international media who try to show the truth about the inaction of Russian troops in Ukraine. Of course, the profession of a journalist is a risk, but US citizen Brent Renaud paid his life for trying to highlight the aggressor’s ingenuity, cruelty and ruthlessness.”
Following Renaud’s death, tributes have been pouring on social media, with many journalists praising his bravery.
