Parents, Family, and Siblings
Mia was born with the full name Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam. She is the daughter of Arul Pragasam and Kala. Her father is a Sri Lankan Tamil engineer, activist, and writer, whereas her mother is a seamstress.
When she was six months olds, her parents move to Sri Lanka from London. While growing up, her brother name Sugu was born.
Eventually, her father changed the name to Arular and created a member of the Eelam Revolutionary Organisation of Students (EROS), a Tamil political group affiliated with the LTTE. Within eleven years, the Sri Lankan Civil war was started causing the Arulpragasam family to hide from the Sri Lankan Army.
However, their life wasn’t easy as they have less contact during the Civil War period.
M.I.A. began her school at the Holy Family Convent in Jaffna and earned the painting skills. Then, her mother moved them to Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India, and then moved to London as refugees in 1986.
She completed Richards Lodge High School in Wimbledon. In 2000, M.I.A. graduated with a degree in Fine art, Film, and video from London’s Central Saint Martians College of Art and design.
