The Grammy-nominated Scottish musician, Sophie Xeon – SOPHIE – passed away on Saturday morning, 30 Jan., at 34. The Glasgow-born groundbreaking artist had worked with famous artists like Madonna and Charli XCX. Her debut album ‘Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides’ was nominated for a Best Dance/Electronic Album Grammy.

Sophie, the experimental pop musician and producer, died aged 34 following a ‘terrible, sudden accident’ on Saturday morning in Athens. The musician passed away at around 04:00 a.m. at home in the Greek capital Athens on 30 January.

According to Sophie’s record label, Transgressive, the musician slipped and fell after climbing to watch the full moon. The publicist’s statement posted on Twitter read:

“True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and slipped and fell. She will always be here with us. The family thank everyone for their love and support and request privacy at this devastating time.”

They also added:

“Sophie was a pioneer of a new sound, one of the most influential artists in the last decade. Not only for ingenious production and creativity but also for the message and visibility that was achieved. An icon of liberation.”

Fans and musicians took to Twitter to pay tribute to the late musician. One transgender fan tweeted:

‘As a trans woman, Sophie’s music and message of empowerment means so much to me- more than I could ever put to words. She is and will always be a true icon of the community who gave us a voice and an outlet.’

French singer-songwriter Christine and the Queens said:

‘She rebelled against the narrow, normative society by being an absolute triumph, both as an artist and as a woman. I can’t believe she is gone. We need to honor and respect her memory and legacy. Cherish the pioneers.’

Details about Sophie’s funeral haven’t been disclosed. Her family has asked for privacy and respect for the late musician’s fanbase.
