Maya Jama

Maya Jama is a renowned TV and radio presenter who made her first acting debut in the Netflix comedy series The Duchess in 2020. She first gained attention after she began presenting MTV’s ‘The Wrap Up’ in 2014. Most recently, she co-hosted BBC 1’s ‘Peter Crouch: Save Our Summer’ during the 2020 lockdown and is now busy filming her next film ‘Something In The Water.’

Originally from Bristol, United Kingdom, Maya Jama was born on August 14, 1994, under the star sign Leo. The 30-year-old television presenter is British by nationality and belongs to a mixed ethnicity as she is of Somali and Swedish descent. Jama initially worked for JumpOff.TV in London, Sky on TRACE Sports, and Rinse FM as a weekday DJ. In August 2014, she joined MTV as a presenter for The Wrap Up. She then went on to host MTV News and MTV Essentials. Additionally, she hosted a travelogue covering the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Copa90’s Maya’s FIFA World Cup Cities, and the World Cup Taxi series.

Jama became the youngest ever person to host the MOBO Awards in 2017. She also worked with the BRITS, hosting a live Facebook stream from the Red Carpet, and hosting the 2017 Pre Brits Party. Last year, she opened and hosted the 2020 EE BAFTA red carpet as well.

In 2018, Jama joined BBC Radio 1 and began presenting Greatest Hits on Saturdays and co-presenting every Friday with Chris Stark and Scott Mills. She also hosted her first ever TV show on MTV’s True Love or True Lies, presented The Circle on Channel 4 with Alice Levine, co-presented Stand Up To Cancer, and became the team captain on the ITV2 rap panel show Don’t Hate the Playaz. 

2020 was a big year, with Jama being a regular on ITV2’s Celebrity Juice and hosting the BBC 1 show Save Our Summer with Alex Home and Peter Crouch. She also hosted Channel 4’s Young Black and Gifted.

The Save Our Summer presenter, was born to mother, Saide. Her mother, who is of Swedish descent, gave birth to her when she was only 18. Meanwhile, Jama’s father is of Somali descent. Her parents named her after the US author and poet Maya Angelou.

At the age of 12, Jama stopped visiting her father in prison and blocked him from her thoughts for a decade. The presenter remains close to her mother. She and her mother have made a few appearances together on talk shows and even attended private celebrity events.
