John was born on August 5, 1968, in Seattle, Washington, to a physician dermatologist father, John E. Olerud, and mother Lynda as John Garrett Olerud. His father was a baseball player from Libson, North Dakota, and he had developed a tendre for baseball from an early age, thanks to his father. He is the cousin of retired MLB player Dale Sveum.
John did his high schooling from Interlake High School in Bellevue, Washington, where he played baseball, basketball, and golf for three years. He had even led his school to state high school baseball championship. Later he joined Washington State University and played baseball for the same.
